THE QUESTION OF THE CRACK "ONLY LOVE CAN ACT AS A CIVILIZING FACTOR"

I have been working in a treatment center for users of alcohol and other drugs. Here the predominant alcohol dependence is among the elderly. Among young patients crack is the drug of choice and causes severe levels of addiction because of the nature of the substance. Crack is killing our young people, especially the poorest, at alarming rates. They become involved in crime, die because of debts to the traffickers and for many reasons that trivialize the murder in this medium. What's happening? Here is a question to be proposed to society as a whole, because violence is not restricted to users. Violence affects us daily. The patients themselves report feeling like supermen under the effect of this drug, and capable of any act to get money to buy more and more. Because of this, they rob and kill with such ease. Something is missing in human society, it seems not to offer renewable energy that we desperately need; more and more people resort to chemical modification of reality. Particularly, I believe in Freud's statement that "nothing is more essential to man than the desire to feel loved." I also think he is very right in saying that "only love can act as a civilizing factor." But in this case, we are in serious difficulties because human society is in many respects, predatory, psychopathic and perverse. His goal was never the man's heart, the development of their potential and their right to a dignified life. I do not advocate the practice of violence and impunity. I would just like to suggest a reflection on the type of energy that we lack, on the conditions that distort the human mind to the point of trivializing life. Surely there is something wrong with our world, our point of view and our concept of normal society.
